Frequently Asked Questions
What happens at a PTA meeting?
PTA meetings are a great way to hear directly about what is going on at Ainsworth, as well as help contribute to decisions about PTA programs and events. The general agenda for a typical PTA meeting includes:
- Welcome
- Approval of minutes (from the last meeting)
- President’s report
- Treasurer’s report
- Unfinished business
- New business
- Committee reports
- Announcements
- Adjournment
Am I able to bring up my own questions and concerns during a PTA meeting?
Yes, you can bring up any question or concern during a PTA meeting. There is always an agenda for the meetings to ensure that we keep the meeting on track. There is also a point in the meeting, usually at the end, when a president will ask for new business. At that time, you can bring up any topic that is not formally listed on the agenda. If there is time to discuss during this meeting, the topic can be addressed. If the topic needs more time than is available, the president may add to a future meeting. You are also welcomed to submit an item for the agenda in advance by emailing ainsworthptainfo@gmail.com.
How do I get more involved in the PTA, even if I can’t attend the meetings?
Ainsworth has lots of different ways to get involved in the community. If there is a specific event or position, you’d like to volunteer for, let us know. Review our Volunteer page for more information. Additionally, keep up to date with meeting happenings by reading the meeting minutes and News and Notes.
What is the deal with the complicated parliamentary procedures?
When you go to a PTA meeting, you will likely hear “motions”, “approvals”, calls for member votes, etc. It might seem strange or even a little intimidating, but it’s just how we run the meetings. PTA meetings are governed by Robert’s Rules of Order (National PTA’s Robert’s Rules of Order – the Basics write-up). Though it can seem cumbersome for a typical parent group at first, parliamentary procedure is simply a set of rules for conducting the flow and organized meeting.
