Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) at Ainsworth

Discover great books while building teamwork, comprehension, and confidence!

Oregon Battle of the Books, commonly known as OBOB, is a statewide reading program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries. Ainsworth students in grades 3–5 read books from the official list and compete in friendly, quiz-style battles.

Why Participate?

OBOB helps students:

Develop a love of reading
Explore different authors, genres, and perspectives
Strengthen reading comprehension
Practice teamwork and good sportsmanship
Build confidence in a fun and supportive environment

Students do not need to read every book themselves. Teams can divide the 16-book list so that every title is covered.

Who Can Participate?

Ainsworth students in grades 3–5
Teams of three or four students
Readers of all interests and abilities

Teams may be organized by students, parents, caregivers, or teachers. Each team should choose a fun, school-appropriate team name.

If your student wants to participate but needs help joining or forming a team, please contact the OBOB coordinators.

Registration

Registration Opens — Tuesday, September 22
Registration Deadline — Friday, November 13 at 11:59 p.m.
One registration form must be submitted for each student.

How to Get Started

Form a team. Create a team of three or four students and choose a team name.
Register each student. Submit one registration form for every team member by November 13.
Explore the books. Review the official 2026–27 OBOB Book List.
Divide the reading. Decide how your team will cover all 16 books. No individual student is expected to read every title.
Practice together. Meet regularly to discuss the books and work through sample questions.

State Championship — Saturday, April 17 | Chemeketa Community College, Salem

During the Battle Night Information Session, students and grown-ups will receive an overview of the agenda, rules, and what to expect on battle days. There will also be time for questions.

The winning Ainsworth team will advance to the Regional Tournament in March.

Team Poster Guidelines

Teams are encouraged to create a poster to bring to their battle. Posters help identify and celebrate the teams while adding to the fun of the event.

Poster Requirements

Poster boards are available for pickup from the main office.
The team name must appear in large, clear lettering.
Posters may include drawings, pictures, and other decorations.
Team names and designs must be school-appropriate and family-friendly.
The names of all team members should be written on the back.

Information That Cannot Appear on Posters

Posters may not contain information about the OBOB books, including:

Book titles
Author names
Character names
Plot details or other information that could assist a team during a battle

Posters that do not follow these guidelines may not be permitted at the battle.

Information for Grown-Ups

Parents, caregivers, and teachers can support teams by helping students arrange practices, stay organized, divide the reading list, and demonstrate good sportsmanship.

The Ainsworth information-session link will be shared with registered families through the PTA newsletter.

Volunteer with OBOB

OBOB depends on parent and caregiver volunteers to make battle days welcoming, organized, and fun.

Volunteer roles may include:

Welcoming and checking in participants
Setting up battle rooms
Scorekeeping
Assisting with event logistics
Cleaning up after battles

No prior OBOB experience is required. Instructions will be provided before or on the day of the event.
